Makeup: A Purge and Purchase Story

Once in a blue moon, I get the idea to buy makeup.  Usually, there is an event that I will be attending as the reason for this thought to cross my mind.  This time my motivations were different.  I am spring cleaning my home, and I had decided that I have too much makeup for the rare occasion that I wear it.  I decided it was time to purge it.

I made it official.  I shared my plan on Facebook.  Then I got scared.  Full on panic.  I was worried that if I threw it all out, I would not be able to replace all of the components within my budget.  So I gathered it up to have ready to purge after I bought the new makeup.

Since I had made this a public announcement, I started getting comments.  I decided that I would make use of $85.oo in Optimum Points and buy my new makeup at Shoppers Drug Mart.  I was advised which store to choose in the city, there are two, and then I was asked if I went yet or not.  A few friends wanted to help.  I felt at this point that it was becoming more of an event than a shopping trip on the other side of the city.

One of my friends is trained in makeup application.  She was joining me to get a few hours break from being a full-time Mom.    She had asked me a few weeks ago that if there was anything that I was doing, she would gladly join me to get a break.  She lives outside of the city, and we don’t see each other as much as we used to, so I thought it would be a perfect girls day out if she was available.  She made arrangements, and I would be picking her up the next day.  We decided that if our mutual friend felt up to it, that we would take her too, or if not, we would visit her before the day trip was over.  By this time another friend had asked if she could join us.  So, a party of 4 showed up at the store the next day.

I had decided before we got there that I was going to need a skin care routine.  I don’t really have one, and I wanted to replace the skin cleansers I had been using because they had expired.  The lady I was consulting with helped me with all of my choices.  She was amazing!  She walked me through the basics and helped me pick colours and brands that some friends had recommended, but I had never heard of before.  It was an adventure!  One friend joined the shopping spree and found the store to be quite impressive, as I did.  Our other friends were with another consultant, and one of them, the friend I was giving a day out of the mommy land, she was getting a makeover.

Those of us that were shopping got a bonus lip gloss and 2 free movie admission tickets.  That was really great!  His & Hers gift for her shopping.  Win-win!

When we finished there, it was time to really take a hard look at the old makeup and force me to purge it.  There was a Starbucks next door, so we went in there with my 2 large Ziploc bags full of my older makeup.

We got our drinks and snacks and found a table.  When we were settled in, we made a plan of attack.  Certain things needed to be tossed.  Others could be donated, my friend has a teenager.  As discussed in detail on my Facebook wall, you can clean powdered makeup with alcohol.  90% was recommended, the kind you have to ask for. You wet the powder and wipe off the top layer of the powdered makeup with a tissue.  The rest of the powder is then left to evaporate the alcohol, and it is clean and able to be used safely again.  Makeup that was in decent shape was put into a donate pile.

All the old mascara was tossed, as it was all more than 3 months old.  Any colours or products I wasn’t certain about,  were set aside to compare to my new makeup at the end.  I would say that the donate/toss makeup amounted to 2/3 of the total makeup I had there before I went shopping.

Makeup Clean up

Left: to toss Right: to donate

After we all went home, I then began planning phase 2 of this plan I had hatched.  I needed to find a way to keep all of the new and old makeup organized.  I went on a few different trips to some local stores and found bits and pieces to pull together my very own cosmetics counter in my Master Bathroom.

This is the final result of my organization phase:

Obviously, I did not buy all of the product shown here for $85.00 in Optimum points.  With the points, you have to pay the taxes when you redeem them.  So I think I made good use of the points, and I am using the cleansing routine now on a daily basis.

The pic below shows what I kept, in the Ziploc bag, and what is new is placed on the counter. This is the final result of the purge and purchase:

Tish's Makeup

New and To Keep Makeup.

I have also purchased Vichy Skin Cleansing, Toning, and Moisturizing products, not shown.  I am happy with my purchases, although I find the new lip stain ( the 2nd tube from the right) to be a little bright.  I guess that means I will have to go shopping again…

When I take the time to actually do my makeup and have a reason to put it on, I will write about the experience, with before and after pics.  I have lots of before pics to choose from.  What a fun afternoon we had.  Do you have any organization tips for your cosmetics?  What product is in your must have list?

Weekend Warrior

It’s here!  The first official weekend of the summer!  I am gearing up to run errands and host a BBQ today.  I have been working hard at my Spring Cleaning Challenge, and I am literally at the finish line!  I have made it to the Master Bedroom and Bathroom.

Last weekend, I worked really hard to have the floors done, the guest room ready, and the main bathroom was cleaned.  When I did this, I had to move things out of the way.  I moved them into the master bedroom.  A pile gathered on my bed.  When it was time to crawl into that bed, the only logical place to temporarily store these items was in the sunken bathtub in the master bathroom.

This means I made a lot of progress in most of the house, but not all.  Today I plan to work on that.  The word purge is now in my weekend plans again, and it does not refer to food in any way.

I have been working on this project since last fall.  I started with my clothing.  I then went through the kitchen and didn’t have a lot to purge there, but rather spent time cleaning and organizing.  I have purged my makeup to make room for new makeup.  I am still in the middle of writing about that experience.  Today I plan to purge and organize my craft supplies.

I have decided that I am not going to do this alone.  I have asked a friend to help me with this chore.  It is not going to be a hard thing to do, but it may prove to be difficult.  Remember when I wrote I had purged my makeup?  I gathered it all up and then was unable to throw it out until I bought the new makeup.  I wanted to start with a clean palette, but I was very worried that I would not be able to afford to replace everything, and I decided to not throw it out until I had done the shopping so I would not be left without a critical item for my new makeup collection.

As I wrote, I am working on that story, and I plan to have it published sometime this week.  If the zit I treated that promptly decided to cause a skin reaction to the treatment and blew up over my face would kindly heal and let me feel like I can safely try my new makeup on, that would be fantastic.

When I went through my clothing, I did it all on my own.  I reduced my wardrobe by 50%.  I donated it to a friend who upcycles fabric.  So far, the only items I have really missed were some of the more lightweight tank tops that I gave away.  One of my errands today is to replace those tank tops.  I have some, but I have not had a clothing shopping budget regularly for many years.  We have been working insanely hard on our household budget, and we are making some changes to that.  I am looking forward to the days when I don’t feel guilty about buying a new article of clothing to wear.  Or about buying a new book or magazine.  Things I like to buy from time to time.  Mostly beading magazines, and more recently, a writing magazine.  It will also be useful to know what I have on hand for craft supplies, so I don’t purchase items that I don’t need because I don’t know what I have in my stash.

The last area of my house that needs TLC is my office, a corner of my living room.  I have been building up to getting this area ready for spring cleaning.  It is where I plan to do my writing, and a fitting final task for all of the cleaning I am doing to prepare for writing.  I have organized the desk several times since I moved here, and it is long overdue.  Time to fire up the paper shredder when I am ready to tackle the last big area.  I am really proud of how much I have accomplished this year with my cleaning projects, and although I still have some smaller areas to work on after my deadline, the larger, more complicated projects will be done and over with, so I can feel confident about my home not falling apart when I start writing my book.  Maybe I will even be able to make time for more creative projects after it is all finished.

Phase 2 will be starting when I am settling into writing my book.  With the larger cleaning projects being finished, I will have to switch gears and get the maintenance cleaning done, to keep my home from ever becoming a disaster like it was when I decided to start the spring cleaning for real this year.

I also hope that this weekend is a start of more entertaining at my house.  I am feeling good about it, and not too embarrassed when I look around at the progress I have made here, the last 6 months.  Time to get going and finish this stage, so I can close the chapter of Spring Cleaning 2017, and open a new book to start writing it.

I hope my friend enjoys bouncing the house with me this afternoon, I need the extra push when it comes to purging craft supplies.  She is invited to stay for the BBQ as a thank you for her taking the time to help me out.  What are you working on this weekend?

Egads! I am up REALLY early on a Saturday morning.  There must be a reason.  Oh yes, there is.  A friend wanted to go Yard Sale Shopping today.  It is a bit rainy, so we may not do a lot of that, but we have errands, and he doesn’t have a car.  I am trying to make more time for my friends, as they are important in my life.

As soon as we are done, Operation Spring Cleaning is going to be completed.  I am expecting guests this month, starting tomorrow!  I will still have some to do, but today will be the day for the final push.  I need to be ready.  My parents are coming, and I have not seen them in two years.  I am over the moon excited to see them.

I have a plan.  I thought it up when I was supposed to be sleeping last night.  I will start in the guest room, then the bathrooms.  After that, the floors will need cleaning.  All of that will take time, and I hope I have more time when I finish all of the chores I have for today.

My Makeup Blog story is in the draft phase.  In the next 2 weeks, I plan to publish it.  I know it has been taking a really long time for this, but I am writing it without pictures.  When I have everything organized after cleaning the Master bedroom,  I will then have a place for all of my new makeup, and then I can try it out.  See, I DO have a plan, and I have been buying bits and pieces of organization supplies along the way.  Maybe today I will find something to help with that.

I wanted to write this early this weekend so I can focus on what I need to do.  I am taking on this weekend with a full, running start, and fueling myself with coffee.  Lots of coffee.

I hope you are all having a productive, fun-filled, happy weekend!  I am going to give it my all, and then some.  What are you doing this weekend?  What do you do to prepare for guests that visit?  Let me know!  Maybe I can learn something new!

Weekend Warrior

Here we go again!  It is the middle of a sunny, not too hot but a little too breezy weekend.  I say that because it is BEAUTIFUL out, but not quite warm enough for wearing shorts. Perfect weather to cook and clean in.  Too bad yesterday was an errands day, so not a lot got done around the house.  We did take some time to enjoy the sunshine, though.

We went out to a fundraiser for Great Danes yesterday.  Roy bought a t-shirt to support the cause.  I am holding off because I would rather buy one from the Boston Terrier Rescue Canada group, BTRC as I volunteer with them.  We had lunch and hit up some stores.

There was a bead sale, so I went there first.  I then went to Bed Bath and Beyond.  I would spend more money in there if I had it to spend, well who am I kidding, I love shopping, and money flows faster than mercury through my hands.  Blink twice, and it’s gone, kind of like my awesome time management skills, I have the same ability in both of those areas.  Amazing talents to have…not! My husband went to the pet store.  He is working really hard on his 75-gallon fish tank set up.  I cannot wait to finally post some pics when it is all done!  I will share the finished setup photos when he is happy with it and ready to show it off.

At the second store I found some coffee on sale, not as good of a sale as the last time I was there, but still, a sale is better than full price.  The reason I went was to get an organizational drawer for my fridge.  There is a drawer on a slider in the middle of my fridge, but the space underneath that drawer is a nightmare to keep organized.  My husband does not want to open the fridge and see multiple organization containers inside.  I see the value of the system, but don’t want to buy more bins for the fridge until he changes his mind.  This is the beginning of that transition.  It may never proceed past the initial phase, but at least I get to tackle one huge problem area in our fridge.

I started my Sunday off in Church.  I do like going and was a little late, but better late than never, I thought.  So I went.  Then I went to a coffee shop to wait for my ride home.  It was a good start to the week, and to my Sunday.

I am headed back into the kitchen today.  I NEED to run the dishwasher and get the dishes back under control.  I think I am starting to feel better, hurrah for antibiotics and trying a different kind!  I am wanting to do things again.  Still not feeling completely healthy, but feeling like I want to get some things done around here again is a big plus.

I didn’t get things done last weekend.  I was really feeling awful, and sometimes what you need to do has to be prioritized.  I needed to rest so that I would get better, and be able to get some spring cleaning done this weekend.

I am not going to focus only on the kitchen today.  I have an issue in the Master Bedroom that needs attention.  I am notoriously famous for piling things up everywhere I go.  My desk, my craft supplies, clothes or anything and everything.  I do not like putting things away.  So today, I am going to take the time to change the sheets and put my clothes away.  Then I can rearrange the dresser and assemble the 6 cube shelving unit I bought a while back.  If I really get on a roll, there may be pics here next weekend! I am still not feeling the motivation to finish the kitchen, so I am going to change the plans for today after I get those dishes done.  I have some prep cooking to do also.  I want the kitchen clean before I start cooking. I have 3 lbs of ground beef and a whole chicken to work with today when prep cooking.  The beef will make 2 different meals, and the chicken is going into my crock pot. I really love making this recipe with whole chickens, ever since I found it online a while ago.

So, I intend to fully bounce the house today.  That is a Tish-ism.  You can read about it here: Bouncing the House.  The tunes will be cranked, and I will be doing a little singing and dancing while I work.  After all, if it isn’t a little bit fun, I will never get it done!

The Internet is not Just for Evil

chance-717501_1920

Take your chance and try something new!

I have been reflecting today as I am now actively involved in a fourth new group I found on facebook.  There are a lot of possible outcomes when one surfs the internet.  One click can lead down a dark narrow path to things you never imagined, not even in your worst nightmares.  Evil does lurk in the world, and I am certain that there is a way to twist any online search into something most people would never look for.

I have been expanding my horizons and plans for the future.  I am careful when I am online, but I choose ads on facebook if they REALLY speak to me.  That is how I found the A Bowl Full Of Lemons facebook group.  I was looking for guidance and inspiration in my household cleaning struggles.  I know how to clean, I just don’t like doing it!  So I clicked on the link, joined the group, and worked on one project.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Pantry Shelf Project

Since then, it has been fairly organized, and I had some help to reinforce the shelves (Thanks, Dad!).  It needs some TLC this year, but I am still proud of completing this project.  The facebook group has SO many good organization ideas, before and after pics, and some amazing decorating ideas.  It is something I have worked towards this year, and so far I have been able to share my Coffee Station Complete! project.  There will be more pics coming soon from my kitchen, I promise!

I have yet to make it through the whole house with the challenge.  I am confident that this will be the year.  I shared a picture when I bought a new shelving unit for my Master Bedroom, as I am moving my craft studio out of the Guest Room and relocating it in the larger Master Bedroom.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Craft Studio Relocation Project

The area is still “under construction”. That means I am still in the planning stages of how to reorganize my craft supplies in this room.  I have taken step two today, and purchased a second cube bookcase, with 6 squares, not 9.  I had already bought the matching plastic bins for it while they were on sale, but again, I felt I was being held back from completing this project because I didn’t have all of the pieces for it ready to go.  I still have to assemble the shelf, (and move a dresser to that side of the room to put the new shelf on top of) but I can work on that as soon as I finish my kitchen.  I have no regrets about joining this facebook group, at all.

I also found the Trim Healthy Mama (THM) Plan in the same way.  THM is a lifestyle change in how you eat food.  It is wonderful, they have more than one facebook group, actually, and I am a member of several different THM facebook groups.  I have implemented many of their guidelines into my life, and when I am on plan, I feel great!  I need to focus on staying on plan more than being off plan because I KNOW IT WORKS WHEN YOU WORK IT.  I have seen it for myself.  So I start every day trying to stay on plan.  Some days I succeed.  Others I don’t.  One of the best things about the plan is that you work it into your own life, and if you go off plan, well you just pull up your socks and get back on plan.  No worries.  I realized, when I was looking at this ad two years ago, that what I was doing was not working, so I was ready to try something different.  I am still not 100% on plan, but I am more convinced than ever that I can do it because I am.  This is another group that came along when I needed it, and I have no regrets about joining this group, either.

The third group I joined in 2016.  I was thinking about how to get my lyrics out to the world.  I had watched a motivational video, I have written about this before, and I decided it was time.  About the same time I started looking into this, I decided that I was also done waiting to write books, and I wanted to make the dream of becoming an author a reality.  While this was all being processed in my mind, another facebook group, the Ninja Writers showed up in my ads.  Well, this group has been a game changer for me.  The Ninja Writers Facebook Page has been an incredible resource.  I had no idea how to brand myself as an author, how or why to start a Blog, or what I had to do to make this all effective towards my goal of becoming an author.  I even designed my own tartan and logo for it! I have made friends that have really helped me with this blog, and spark a passion in me that I didn’t even know I had the potential for.  And if you are reading this, you know that I am blogging frequently, to develop my writing habit and expand my creative horizons.  There are no regrets for me in terms of joining this group.  Only positive strides towards making a dream into a reality.

The fourth group is a new addition.  One of my fellow Ninja Writers shared a new group page on her wall, encouraging people to check it out.  I became curious, and trusted my fellow Ninja Writer friend, and joined the group.  It is called 100 Coffees.  They have a facebook group, 100 Coffees Facebook Group and through that group, you can join their website.  It is for women entrepreneurs, and they are based on networking through the group, to meet members through coffee meetings.  This has an immense potential for people like me, trying to find their way in this online business world.  Membership is free, and eventually, there will be other options for paid subscribers, but I am in the group and hoping to make new friends, get and give support to and from members, and to learn as much as I can from my peers.  This is a great concept, and I am glad to be involved with it already.

One thing that is very important to keep in mind when you join a new group online, is to find out the rules.  The people that create these groups have their reasons, and sticking to their rules will mean you get to remain in the group, and get all the benefits of belonging.  If you choose to just join a bunch of groups to do your own thing, disregarding the rules, expect your time in that group to be limited.  The rules keep the group working together towards a common goal, and going your own way will likely result in you getting the boot.

So there you have it.  The internet is not just being used for evil.  When you are surfing, and something keeps showing up in your feed, and it is a group or a theme that resonates with you, check it out!  You might find something wonderful!  If you don’t,  leave the group and find another one that works for you and helps you in your life.  If any of the above groups peak your interest, check them out!  I am glad I did, and maybe you will be too!

Weekend Warrior #6

Well, I decided it was time to give a progress report.  The tunes are cranked.  I am motivated.  So what did I get done?

I have decided to publish this first thing Saturday morning so I can keep the momentum going that I found last weekend.  I worked on my kitchen DURING THE WEEK!  I am really happy with my progress.

I moved the dish drainer out of the way to create a new Coffee Station.  I blogged about that on Monday, because I was so excited that I had to share what I did.  For a recap of that short story, here is a link: Coffee Station Complete!

I washed the curtains, and they are all hung back up.  I also had to flip the windowsill decorations to match the flip of the coffee station.  The curtain has to be at the opposite side of the window, which caused the rearrangement of the items.  I have put the dish drainer on the other side of the sink.  It is a better place because the dishes are on that side of the kitchen.  Most of them.  Then I continued to the last section of the countertop.  Breadbox, toaster and blender are shuffled.  The electric stand mixer is by the dish drainer now.  It meant I could tuck the toaster beside the breadbox, instead of it being in front of the breadbox like it was before.

Then I ran out of steam.  My husband helped during the week, which can help me to get going.  I have plans to start my day with paying it forward.  I am off to help another friend in the land of blogging and website design.  I will do what I can to help, and we will see how far we get.  The last friend I helped has 2 blog posts published and is still figuring it all out.  I plan to help her again when our schedules align, and also to share her blog in the future when it is developed further.  I am also planning to share blogs from others that I help, even if they do all the work and I just gave them ideas to run with.  There is at least one person I know that is doing this, and it is nice to see them happy about their progress.

After I finish helping my friend today, I am going to go back into my kitchen, and get the house bouncing again!  I need to keep the momentum going so that I CAN finish, otherwise I will NEVER finish, and that is just not acceptable to me.  I need to do this cleaning challenge, more than ever!  I need to prepare my home for neglect while I am writing.  I know, it will still need maintenance cleaning, and I shall be looking into that when I am at that stage.  For now, I will leave you knowing I am fighting through the procrastination and laziness, doing good in the world by helping friends, and getting my kitchen ready for spring, with a promise of more pictures as I complete different areas.

I am rethinking storage in my kitchen.  I sense more reorganization in my future of 4 areas.  I have very little room for storage, so I have to plan any changes in detail before tacki\ling them because any changes are critical, and need to improve on how things are now, rather than just add more confusion and not maximize the storage space that I have available.  I am preparing to take this project on this weekend.

Have a productive Saturday!  Who knows, maybe that next Weekend Warrior will be tomorrow’s story, with those pics I am preparing to share.

Weekend Warrior #5

Well, look at that.  I made it to another weekend.  It is unplanned, as of yet, and that could be dangerous.  In terms of making the most of my weekend off, that is.

Looking around, I can get overwhelmed at the amount of work I still need to do.  But just looking at it won’t fix that.

So I have to make a list.  It will be for both days, as I never seem to finish the list I make in one day, so I’ll be realistic.  Then  I will pick some small things to get me going.  It is motivating to cross things off of the list.

eggs and avs

Eggs and Avs (THM) A nice filling breakfast. I love poached eggs, but you can fry them if you prefer. I love this quick, healthy breakfast on weekends.

We do have to run errands today.  So I’ve filled the Overthinkin and Coffee Drinkin mug to sip my coffee while I Brunch and write.  Tomorrow I’ll need to prep cook, and my husband doesn’t know it yet, but there is a package of bacon for tomorrow’s breakfast.  He wouldn’t eat this with me, but he loves bacon and eggs.

I am still struggling with the cleaning challenge.  I feel like this weekend might be when I get back on track.  I set the goals at the start of the year, and I intend to keep them.  But where to begin?  I am overwhelmed by a number of things to do on an exponentially growing to do list and underwhelmed with the energy to attack it.  How do I fight my way to doing instead of dreading?

The lists and music are the answer.  Even if I take an hour to make the list, it is a start.  Do I write down everything, share it with my husband, and tackle it with him?  Will we bicker if we tackle the same thing together?  Sometimes that happens.  If we are both working in the kitchen, there is not a lot of space when we are doing the dishes.  My kitchen is deceptive.  It looks spacious but has very little cupboard space.  I have had to be creative in what I have and where I store things.  I have a bookcase, an open pantry, and a large standing shelf with a door on it.

My Open Shelf Pantry

This is the final result of the only thing I really accomplished in the first year I joined the Cleaning Challenge. I need to tidy it up this year, but for the most part, it is still in good shape, and just needs a good dusting job. It is my Open Shelf Pantry.

We have often talked about how to get more efficient storage in the kitchen.  We are planning to get some furniture “someday” at Ikea.  It will be mostly to set up the living room, but the kitchen will get a boost too.  It will happen, it is hard sometimes to make do and stay motivated, but it is what it is.

This afternoon we went to get our taxes finished up.  Done for another year.  We then made an afternoon trip of going to two local SPCA animal shelters.  We are starting to think about getting our first dog, and saw a lot of cats too.  We will get another cat too, someday, but we needed a break, after having been a cat only home for so long.

This evening we went to visit some friends.  It was nice to get out and socialize as a couple with another couple that we are friends with, but haven’t been to visit in quite some time.

Another productive day outside of the house.  I will have to work really hard tomorrow to catch up.  It can be done.  It will be done.  It has to.  I hope the energy is still with me tomorrow.  The house needs a bouncing!

Weekend Warrior

weekend-warrior

This picture really made me laugh.  It will be the picture for my new Blogging series, called Weekend Warrior.  I am working on cleaning and organizing my home so that when I am ready to dive into writing my books, I will not have to worry about what is not getting done or what should be getting done.

I just had breakfast.  I like to sleep in on the weekends.  This means if I am motivated and working on my house and chore list, it continues well after dark.  I am a night owl, but find the weekday schedule really helps me to stay on track with my health.  So I am a part of the rat race, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, working woman.  I do have a day job.  The bills need to be paid.  SO on a weekend when there are no plans outside of the house, I sleep in and go a little off schedule.  I enjoy that.  When we get a dog later this year, I hope it likes to sleep in on the weekends too.  I realize that there will be necessary walks and wake ups with a dog to take them outside, but that doesn’t mean a nap won’t follow those little adventures.

I am breaking in my new coffee mug.  It says, “Overthinkin’ and coffee drinkin’ ” it suits my life and my logo.  It is a good size, and I purchased it last weekend on a whim.  I saw it on facebook and had to have it.  It is so “ME!”  I will drink coffee from it while I write.  It holds 16 oz of coffee, and that is a good start for my weekend coffee.

new-coffe-mug

Plans for the weekend are developing, on the social side of things.  Which means I have to make the most of the afternoon as I may be out this evening.  Combining the things I don’t want to do with things I do want to do works out, somewhat.  It can be counterproductive, too, though.  If I am really on a roll, and getting things done on my list, then it is hard to find the motivation to keep going if I have to stop.  Or sometimes I don’t start at all because I know I won’t be able to finish.

Sometimes I get a lot done, and sometimes I overthink the projects and that takes up all of my time.  Music is a huge motivator for me.  If the tunes are cranked, I find it hard to sit still.  I like background music or TV when I am surfing the internet, or working on stationary projects, but to get me up and moving, the tunes have to be cranked.

Weekend Warrior.  That is what I feel like when I am having a productive weekend.  It doesn’t mean I am changing the world, or working on building or renovating anything.  It does mean I am making progress on my lists, getting up and moving around, staying motivated, and having a little fun.  Making the most of my free time, and getting that much closer to the goal of writing my books.  Singing and dancing my way through the weekend is how I put on my game face.  When I am Bouncing the House, I am getting the lists done, and that is exactly what weekends are for.

Getting back on track with everything in one day

I made some resolutions at the start of this year.  I am working at them, at my own pace.  This week I feel like I am falling behind.  We had a lot of snow early last week.  I missed two days of work just digging out from under it.  My husband, who normally does the shoveling, hurt his back, and is still recovering.  So I did it myself.  It was a lot of work, and the reason I missed the second day is because I spent more than 4 hours shoveling, and it exhausted me.

So I rested for 2 days, when I wasn’t shoveling.  Eat; shovel; sleep; repeat; for 2 days.  I didn’t get much done inside the house for those days.  We managed.  We averted the crisis of having no Pepsi in the house for my husband.  It was a close one, though.  He doesn’t enjoy coffee, he likes Pepsi.  I enjoy coffee, and today, I am home without the car, so I can focus on what needs doing inside the house, and drink a lovely bucket of coffee.

I prep cook on the weekends.  It is on my list of things to do.  I need to get at the dishes and laundry.  I want to finish the kitchen and move on to other rooms, but life happens.  Other projects have popped up in the last month, so it was not a productive couple of weeks in my kitchen.

If you are following my blog, you are familiar with the Tish-ism in Bouncing the House.  It is what I do.  I crank the tunes and clean.  This is in my plans for today.  But where do I start?  There is SO much to DO and only ONE DAY.  I am a weekend warrior when it comes to cleaning, and someday, when I am more energetic or have things under control so that I only need a half hour a day in the week for maintenance house cleaning, that won’t be the case.  I will be able to manage it this way at some point, and then I will have the time I need to focus on writing and crafts.  What I WANT to do.

At the start of the year, I decided on three things as my resolutions.  Work on me by living a healthier lifestyle, clean my house, really clean it, top to bottom, and write a book.  I will not begin writing in earnest until the house is done.  I will never get the cleaning done if I jump into writing and get lost in my creativity.  I have a plan, but it takes dedication to stick to it and get it all done.  One thing at a time, one project at a time, and one day at a time.

My creative mind travels in circles, and this can be distracting when I am working on something.  I start loading the dishwasher, and go through the house to collect dishes.  I find empty bottles and cans that also need to be relocated to the kitchen for rinsing and recycling.  I fill the sink with really hot water, dish soap, and dishes that don’t go in the dishwasher.  I wander into the bedroom and find laundry that needs doing.  Get the laundry started.  And realize that the dishwasher door is still open, the dishwasher is still not full and running, and the sink now has cold water with bubbles and dirty dishes in it.

So I add more hot water to the sink of dishes, and finish loading the dishwasher and take a break at my desk for a few minutes, only to realize that I lost track of time and the water in the sink, which was too hot when I sat down, is cold again and the dishwasher is finished and needs to be unloaded and the clothes in the washer need to be put into the dryer and a new load put into the washer but there is a load in the dryer that needs to be folded and put away.  That was a long and busy sentence on purpose.  It is demonstrating how I get in a loop.

Putting things away is a hard thing for me.  I get so far with the cleaning and I just leave it for later which essentially is never and the clean clothes get piled up and the dishes are just used straight from the dishwasher so they pile up again as the dirty dishes can’t go into the dishwasher if there are clean dishes in there and you get the idea.  I go in circles, constantly, if I let myself, and when I do this, the chances of me finishing anything are slim.

What do I do to fix it?  Well, I am stubborn, and that means if I make myself do all the dishes, I can get them done.  If I don’t start ten other things at the same time.  Some of the chores in my list are the kind you start and have to walk away from, so I try to get them going first.  That is also a trap.  I need a break, and I lose three hours.  I have no concept of time at all.

Turning the music up LOUD helps, as long as I don’t turn it down on a break.  I can’t sit at my desk for too long if the music is loud.  That is another tactic I use.  It works if I don’t just grab the remote and turn the music down so I can spend more time at my desk procrastinating from the things I really should be doing.

Another thing I am going to implement today is a list.  I find crossing things off of my list gives me a small sense of accomplishment, it means I finished that thing on my list.  I make lists whenever I travel, and go over them several times to be certain that I don’t forget anything, and I cross items off as I pack.  I don’t forget things when I have a list made.  So I need to make more lists.  This can take time and be distracting.  I can put too many things down and never get back to the list, because I need to start a new one.  Or I can just spend too much time making the list and get nothing else done.  Not productive at all.

I think today I will be making more than one list.  I also think I need to make lists more frequently until I get things back under control.  After all, that is one of the goals here, to get things under control so I can let myself do the things I want to do.  I will make two, on a small piece of paper.  One for cooking and one for cleaning.    If I just use both sides of a small piece of paper, I can flip it over, and not waste paper that way.  If the list is small; maybe, just maybe, I can finish everything on it.  And that would help to get me going in the right direction again, and help me get back on track.  OK.  Time to make my little lists and get my day going in the right direction!  When I finish them, I have two writing projects that do need my attention.  That will be my reward for getting the chores done, I can then work on some other projects that will make me feel good about working on them, not just to finish them, as I may or may not finish them by the end of the day.  Getting time to work on them, though, will be a reward I can work toward.  Progress is progress, and that is my ultimate goal for today.

His and Hers Weekend Projects

We are both home this weekend.  He works one in three weekends, and this is his favourite, the three-day weekend.  He has been off since Friday.  I have every weekend off, and rarely go in for overtime on the weekend unless there is a need for extra cash or to make up for missed time.

I am on a mission this year to clean my house, so I can be guilt free when I settle in to write my book, and work on various craft projects.  So I am working on a cleaning challenge, and an organizing challenge.  I also have a plan for maintenance cleaning after the main cleaning is done.  They say it goes quicker every year, and this is the year I plan to finish it.

I am not a hoarder (except when it comes to craft supplies; I am dreading the necessary purge of them), and I know how to clean.  Laziness is my issue.  Combine that with a poor sense of time management and a healthy dose of procrastination, and you get the mess my house is in.  It is lived in, I can find what I need almost every time I need something, and I do enough to get by.  I don’t feel comfortable with guests seeing the disaster zone.  So I have taken it upon myself to get this place clean and tidy before I dive into my next creative projects.

I also go in circles, and am finding this is creeping into the cleaning and organizing schedule.  Yesterday I just could not bring myself to continue the projects started on Friday after work.  I am procrastinating the dreaded craft supply purge, even though I have decided that I will donate the items to the annual Relay For Life Yard Sale in support of my team from work in their fund-raising.  I will be joining the team again this year.  I am moving my craft supplies into my bedroom, out of the guest room.  I have the cutest shelf that I bought for this project.  Last weekend we got it assembled.  Friday the old mattress was removed from the master bedroom, so we could get the new shelving unit in place.  I bought plastic bins for it, and it really is pretty to look at.  Now I am over thinking how to organize it.  So I have stopped that project.

He went to work on the man cave yesterday.  He put his new bookshelf in place Friday night, but needed bolts to complete his project.  Yesterday he went out to get what he needed, and today the man cave looks a lot more organized and there is room to move in there.  We can even sit on the fold down couch that doubles as a guest bed to watch movies in there if we want to.  It hasn’t been cleaned the way I intend to clean in my challenges, but one thing at a time.  I do not plan to clean it for him.  He will have to do that room himself.  I will make sure he knows what needs to be done for spring cleaning in there, and leave it to him.

Yesterday I asked him what he wanted to accomplish this weekend.  He was going to putter in the man cave.  I was OK with that.  This morning, we are taking a bit of time to relax before diving back into the weekend projects.  I asked him what his plans were for today.  As expected, he wants to rearrange furniture for the new fish tank we bought a couple of weeks ago.  The next question was to define my role in his project.  I have been drafted to help lift and move furniture around.  That is fair.  So I am left to figure out what I am going to tackle today, when I am not moving the sofa and chair.

This is the progress in the man cave so far:

The bookcase on the right, and the shelf between the two bookcases that the TV is on are new.  We both have a long way to go in finishing our projects, but progress is progress.

Last night I started cleaning and organizing around my desk.  I wanted to just watch TV, and needed to feel like I was being productive.  So I started.  My office is in the living room, and I need to work on purging paper, and cleaning and organizing the desk and office corner.  All areas of the house need this, so I am not wrong to find something that I can do from my desk.  However, it is not getting the kitchen or the craft supply project finished, either.

This is where my creative mind needs to be put on the back burner for a bit.  I NEED to finish in the kitchen.  It is the first project in my larger,  more in-depth challenge.  I am also going to have to delegate some chores for my husband, or I will never get to write my books.  He is going to get the list for the living room.  He will be exempted from my office area, as I am not going to tackle the man cave.  So he will get the responsibility of 3/4 of the living room.  He doesn’t mind some chores, so if I pick the ones I don’t feel like I need to be in charge of myself, he is fine with pulling his weight in maintaining the household.  Thank goodness!  We both work outside of the home, so we need to team up to tackle things around here.  Sometimes we growl at each other if we are in each other’s way while working on the same tasks, so we work better alone for some chores.  Depending on what it is.  I am fine helping move furniture around.  He is fine pitching in when I need help.  We do work well together, and can count on each other to get things done.

I am going to head back into the kitchen today.  I really need to be puttering at it all week.  I sent out a message that I may be needing help next weekend, as I grew up with sisters, and I am  used to sharing the workload.  My husband was an only child, and he is fine going at his own pace on chores by himself.  He will be working next weekend.  I don’t expect my friends to clean my messy house for me, not at all.  An extra pair of hands is appreciated, but even more importantly, someone to chat with while I work, and help keep me from wandering off to procrastinate is what I really need.  Sometimes, the music isn’t enough.  When I feel like I am OK having a friend over, even if they bring their own craft project to work on while I am cleaning; it helps me stay on track. It also keeps me from starting ten projects at once; as I wander through the house.  Yes, I find a way to go in circles, even though I live in a mini home.  It is how my brain is wired.
